An Introduction to Applied Cognitive Psychology

Co-Authors: Kevin Baker, Corriene Reed, David Heathcote, Moira Maguire & Richard Kemp

An Introduction to Applied Cognitive Psychology offers a student friendly review of recent research in the application of cognitive methods, theories and models to real-world scenarios. The authors approach cognitive psychology by looking at how people use basic cognitive skills in everyday environments. In this way, they explore how people use their knowledge to influence their behaviour in life, and throw light on the inter-relationships between each part of the cognitive system. The central areas of visual perception, attention, memory, language, thinking, decision making and human performance are covered, as in conventional cognitive textbooks, but they are addressed in terms of practical applications to skill training, expertise and skilled behaviour. Whereas experimental psychology often remains in the laboratory, this book will show undergraduates how the implications and methodological insights of theoretical work can be brought into the real world, and vice versa.

Infanticide by Males and its Implications

Infanticide by males is relatively common in primates, carnivores, and rodents, although it tends to be rare even in species in which it occurs. Is this behavior pathological or accidental, or does it reflect a conditional reproductive strategy for males in certain circumstances? In this book, case studies and reviews confirm the adaptive nature of infanticide by males in primates, and help to predict which species should be vulnerable to this phenomenon. Much of the book is devoted to exploring the evolutionary consequences of the threat of infanticide by males for social and reproductive behavior and physiology. Written for graduate students and researchers in animal behavior, behavioral ecology, biological anthropology, and social psychology, this book shows that social systems are shaped by ecological pressures, as well as social pressures such as infanticide risk.

Visual Reflections: A Perceptual Deficit and Its Implications (Oxford Psychology)

How much can we learn about normal visual perception and cognition from a malfunctioning visual system? Quite a lot, as Michael McCloskey makes abundantly clear in this book. McCloskey presents his work with AH, a college student who has an extraordinary deficit in visual perception. When AH looks at an object, she sees it clearly and identifies it readily; yet she is often dramatically mistaken about where the object is or how it is oriented. For example, she may reach out to grasp an object that she sees on her left, but miss it completely because it is actually on her right; or she may see an arrow pointing up when it is really pointing down. AH’s errors, together with many other clues, lead McCloskey to some very interesting conclusions about how we perceive the world. He develops theoretical claims about visual subsystems, the nature of visual location and orientation representations, attention and spatial representations, the role of the visual system in mental imagery, and the levels of the visual system implicated in awareness. Visual Reflections makes a fascinating and compelling case that we can often learn more about a process when it goes awry than when it functions flawlessly.

Cognitive Psychology and its Implications

Anderson offers systematic and accessible presentation of the theoretical foundations of higher mental processes, with each important idea made concrete by specific examples and experiments. Focusing on knowledge representation as the central issue of cognition research, the book emphasizes an information processing approach to the field, but offers thorough coverage of the cognitive neuroscience approach as well (extensively updated for this edition).

Reflecting the evolution of current research, the new Seventh Edition looks closely at the dramatic contributions of cognitive neuroscience to the understanding of cognitive functions.  New coverage, new color insert, new pedagogy, and other content and format innovations, make this definitive new edition the most student-friendly yet.
